Red Wedges
After running for twenty years, the inevitable happened. I tore my meniscus. The physical therapist gave me some brutal news yesterday - first, he told me that I would probably need an operation, second, I would never run again, third, that this was going to be a time consuming project, twenty minutes of leg extensions a night, religiously, twenty minutes of icing and a visit with him twice a week.
I was stoic through this annoucement and then he said something that truly broke my heart. No high heels.
"I can't," I wailed. "I have over two hundred pairs. What if I don't walk in them, just stand in my carpeted classroom?"
No standing.
"Can I sit?", I demanded.
"If you promise not to rise."
My sister, Betsy, told me to move on - wearing my high heels, to another physical therapist, which I would, except I don't think it will matter.
I will wear my spike heels and live with the pain but maybe I should throw some wedges in the mix, because, after all, they won't unbalance me, or at least, he didn't mention that they would create an unbalance -
But then again I didn't ask.
